Projects
Our first two CLEAR projects are providing legal education aid and research in Kenya and Uganda, but the need is as great in many countries in Africa, Latin America and in the former Soviet satellites. Initially however, our focus will be in areas that have a common law system, often based on its British predecessor. There are many such states in Africa where poverty on such a widespread scale renders justice without legal aid a lottery, with similar odds.
Both the Kenyan and Ugandan lawyers would like to achieve a self-sustainable project. To do this in a poor country is almost impossible for the numbers of volunteer lawyers available. Hence we are in the process of developing social enterprise projects – small businesses that will employ the poor, often those released from prison and provide an income stream in country. Provided all net profits are reinvested into the main project such funding will retain the benefit of charitable tax relief. Our first businesses are underway in Mombasa.
